The following books have been used in order to obtain the best possible reflection of the original aircraft and environment. We do recommend them for you to read, to get "the feeling" of flying boat aviation.

The Long Way Home

by

Ed Dover

The story of Pan American Airway's Captain Robert Ford's record-breaking flight around the world following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, told, for the first time, in a full-length dramatized narrative that provides details and anecdotes never before revealed in previous written accounts of the flight.

Ed Dover's background more than qualifies him to spin this tale of aeronautical adventure. As a Flight Radio Officer for Pan American Airways between 1942 and 1948, he flew on board Pan American's Martin M130 and Boeing B314 flying boats.  He also worked as a ground radio operator at Pan Am's radio stations at Pearl City, Oahu and Noumea, New Caledonia during 1942 and 1943. He flew the South Pacific routes from Hawaii to Canton Island, Suva, Fiji, Noumea, and Brisbane, Australia.

In 1992 and 1993 Ed visited with Captain Robert Ford and obtained several hours of taped interviews. He also met with and interviewed Flight Radio Officer Eugene Leach. Those interviews, along with Ed's personal experiences aboard the clippers, provide the foundation for this long-overdue detailed account of a significant event in aviation history. Ed's intimate first hand knowledge of what it was like to fly on these majestic flying boats adds a degree of authenticity that brings a "you-are-there" experience to the narrative.

This version of one of the most famous flights in aviation history is a must-have acquisition for the aeronautical library of any serious aviation history buff, and particularly for those who have had a past connection to the original but not forgotten Pan American Airways.
